With so many litter options available today, it can be difficult to know which is best for your cat. After all, every company claims to be the best. So deciding whether to use clumping or non-clumping litter for our cat can be much more complicated than it appears at first glance.
That is why we decided to compile a helpful guide and list all of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of litter so you can decide which one would be best suited for your kitty and your household.
Clumping Litter is typically composed of bentonite clay, which clumps when wet. When urine comes into contact with this litter, it clumps up into a hard ball, eliminating any odor. Clumping litter is the most popular type of litter these days. There’s a good reason for this. It is far less difficult to clean than the non-clumping variety.
Of course, unscented cat litters are available. If you want to be environmentally conscious, there are clumping litters made from recycled paper or all-natural fibers. You also only need to clean the entire litter box once or twice a month, depending on foot traffic, which is a huge benefit.
Non-clumping litter is much less common in homes, but it has its upsides. While you will need to clean the entire litter box once a week, it is generally less expensive, so this is not a major issue. Because there are so many different types, some people prefer non-clumping litter to clumping litter. Non-clumping materials include clay and natural materials such as wood, pine, corn, wheat, and so on.
While non-clumping litter can absorb urine and eliminate odors, the waste will usually pool at the bottom, making cleaning much more difficult. However, when your kitten is being litter trained, it is much better to use non-clumping litter because there is less chance of them ingesting the litter.
There isn’t a simple answer to this question and It all depends on your and your cat’s individual requirements. Non-clumping litter is preferred by some cats over clumping litter and vice versa. Both have advantages and disadvantages, so you’ll have to do some trial and error to figure out what works best for you.
If you or your cat suffers from allergies, it is obviously preferable for you to look for a formula that is dust-free and fragrance-free. Budget is another important consideration. While both types have budget-friendly options, non-clumping litter is usually the less expensive option.
However, as long as your cat is content and doesn’t have any problems or negative reactions by the type of litter you’re using, there isn’t really any best kind of litter one way or another.
